Summer is here which means fun, sun, and adventuring with your dog. Although both hounds and humans love warm weather and sunshine, it is extremely important to stay protected from those powerful summer rays. We’ve put together a list of products that will help keep your pooch hydrated, cool, and safe so that they can enjoy the months filled with sunshine and warmth to the fullest.

Before diving into our product guide here are some crucial tips to keep in mind for your dogs when the temperatures are high and the sun is shining bright.

Safety 

Don’t leave your dog in an unattended vehicle. On a 75-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can climb up to 115 degrees within an hour. Even with the windows down, a dog can easily overheat if left in these conditions. If you need to run errands, just leave your pup at home. It’ll save you the trouble of worrying about your dog while you’re out.

Avoid hot surfaces like asphalt

The sole’s of your pups’ paws can be very sensitive. If the asphalt’s too hot for you to walk on, chances are it’s too hot for your pup too. Map out other areas to walk your pups such as grassy parks, dog-friendly beaches, or woodsy trails. Hydration

Make sure to supply lots of fresh, clean water. Hydration is one of the most important keys to keeping your dog safe on hot days. Bring a supply of freshwater for your dog when you go out. Always bring a portable bowl and water bottle for your pup when you’re out adventuring in the sun.

If it’s > 85 degrees, leave your dog at home

Sitting at the beach and baking in the sun is something humans enjoy, but it can leave pooches severely dehydrated. Even if you feel like the heat is bearable, remember, when dogs are exposed to moderately high temperatures over an extended period of time, their bodies might be unable to cool down.

Limit exercise

Dogs don’t always know their own limits. If you can tell your dog is breathing more rapidly or having some trouble keeping up his normal pace, slow things down and allow him to cool off. Outdoor activities are great but, instead of playing in the blazing afternoon sun, try tossing a ball around after the sun has gone done and the air is cooler.

Protection

Despite their furry coats, dogs can still be exposed to and damaged by UV rays. Coating their fur and skin in doggy UV protectant sunblock will help prevent burns and keep them healthy.

Shelter

Even if your dog enjoys basking in the sun it is important for Fido to have a shaded area to retire to. Invest in a proper outdoor shelter for your pooch whether it’s a pop-up tent, an awning, or a big tree – make sure your dog is able to get out of the direct sunlight.
